Sonlight Bible College - by Jean-Ricot Louissaint
Jan 16, 2020
I am Jean Ricot Louissaint, director of Sonlight Bible College, born on March 8, 1972 in an open-air market in Port-de-Paix, Haiti. I was a three-year boy when my father passed away and my mother struggled to raise three kids. My mother had to leave the house by 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. When my two brothers and I came from school, our pastor’s wife took care of us.
After graduating from high school, I studied accounting and economics. I married Mercilia Pierre in 1999. We have four children: Joanika, 19, Fabrice, 18, Laura, 13, and Sarah, who is seven.
In August 2008, I decided to attend Sonlight Bible College in order to be able to teach better at Sunday school and have a good understanding of scriptures which was my passion. I graduated in May 2012; I was the valedictorian. Because of this, I received a scholarship to begin a Master’s program in Divinity at Christian University in Limbe, Haiti.
In February 2013, I was called to substitute for a professor who taught a Theology & Doctrine class. Since then, I have been a professor at Sonlight Bible College. This year I am teaching Church & Society and General Epistles. In May 2017, after the departure of Scott Alexander to the United States, I was chosen to lead Sonlight Bible College as director. Our goal is to make Sonlight Bible College a healthy school financially and educationally in order to train and prepare church leaders to serve the Christian community of Haiti and especially Port-de-Paix, North-West, Haiti. Graduates from Sonlight Bible College are making progress in ministry. Some are involved in teaching, others in church planting, and Smyrna Church led by Idelas Piercius and myself is a good example.
Sonlight Bible College is making progress. In June 2019, the College was accredited by the “Ministry of Cults," the Haitian governmental agency that governs religious organizations. The socio-political and economic situation of Haiti affects us in different aspects, and we have struggled as many students cannot afford to attend SBC, or cannot afford transportation to attend.
For the current academic year 2019-2020, we are looking for financial support to increase both our budget and our Bible program. We have hope that God will provide for our needs as we are working for his kingdom. Please consider donating to this endeavor.
Thank you,
Jean Ricot Louissaint
Director, Sonlight Bible College
