Clothing in Haiti

As foreigners in Haiti, it is necessary to remember that Sonlight servants standout in the community. Due to this and the high status Haitians accord teachers, it is imperative that Sonlight staff members look professional each school day. As Christian examples, modest dress is expected at all times.

It is usually hot in Port-de-Paix. However, there are cool and windy days during winter. You will need attire suitable for the tropics, plus a jacket, a sweatshirt, and jeans. You will never need winter-type clothing. During rainy days, umbrellas and raincoats are helpful.

Female teachers need to dress in skirts or dresses with hems no more than 2 inches above the knee. Shorts, skorts, and t-shirts with printed messages are not allowed during school hours. Acceptable footwear includes sandals, dress shoes, and loafers. Shorts and t-shirts are fine for evening and weekend wear.

Male teachers should wear slacks with tucked-in collared shirts for class. A belt and socks with dress shoes are required. Sandals, tennis shoes, shirts with writing or logos, blue jeans, and shorts are not acceptable during school hours. Shorts and t-shirts are fine for evening and weekend wear.

For church and other formal occasions, women should wear modest, somewhat conservative dresses, and men should wear slacks and dress shirts.

Remember that Port-de-Paix is usually very warm. Sonlight Academy is located only a few feet from the ocean, so bring a bathing suit. A hat and sunglasses are helpful for sun protection.

By the way, detergent and other cleaning products are available in Port-de-Paix. However, it will be less expensive to ship these products from the states.
