Communication in Haiti

Although Port-de-Paix may seem like a remote area upon first glance, Sonlight's staff is fairly accessible. Staff members receive e-mail, phone calls, and packages from friends in the states on a regular basis.

Email:
Each Sonlight missionary is given a personal e-mail account. E-mail is the best way to stay in contact with those in the states. Sonlight's internet access is satellite-based, so friends stateside are asked to refrain from sending forwards, chain mail, and large attachment files. Each staff member pays $10 a month for e-mail service.

Phone:
011-509-268-5171 (home of Roger and Norma Alexander)
Home phone numbers are given to some staff members when they first move to Haiti. Messages can be relayed anytime through the number above. When calling Haiti, patience is required because it can take many tries to get through. It is expensive, nearly $3 per minute, to place calls from Haiti.

Letters Only:

Sonlight Ministries PdP
(Name of Missionary)
PO Box 407140
Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33340
Sonlight uses a service called Lynx Air. Mail is sent to an address in the U.S. and then flown to Haiti. Mail arrives about once a week, but it can take as many as eight weeks. This address is only to be used for letters and magazines. All packages, no matter the size, need to be sent to the package address. We send out-going mail whenever people who are visiting travel back to the U.S. There is no consistent schedule.

Packages (All Sizes):

Lady Lotmore
Alexander/(Name of Missionary)
3163 NW South River Dr.
Miami, FL 33142
Personal packages can be sent to a ship named Lady Lotmore. This ship brings supplies and groceries to Sonlights staff. It can take several weeks for packages to arrive. If you want to send clothing, furniture, or supplies to Haiti before you leave the U.S., use the package address. Also, if family or friends want to send care packages or school supplies to you, please ask them to use the boat address.

Emergencies:
Crista Guyer, 812-479-6371
Crista Guyer is the eldest daughter of Roger and Norma Alexander. She is experienced in communicating with Sonlight missionaries, even in times of difficulty. If an emergency arises in Haiti, staff will contact Crista first, and she will then contact people in the states.
