Food in Haiti

Port-de-Paix has a number of grocery stores and one large iron market. The grocery stores primarily carry canned goods and other non-perishables. Some are American products shipped in from the states. You can regularly find soup, canned milk, cake and brownie mixes, snack foods, cookies, crackers, and pasta. These stores also stock health and beauty products. However, for brand preferences, we recommend staff members ship in their own health and beauty supplies.

The iron market commonly sells Haitian-made items and fresh produce, like grapefruit, citron, potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, oranges, bananas, papaya, carrots, onions, beets, and mangoes. Produce is available in large quantities and can be purchased cheaply while in season. Inexpensive staples are always available. These include flour, sugar, rice, beans, brown sugar, tomato paste, salt, pepper, and other spices.

Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, and 7UP are sold in both bottles and cans. Due to the wide variety of citrus fruits, fresh juice is popular among the Haitian population. Tap water is not safe to drink. Plan on using a purifying pitcher or Clorox to cleanse drinking and cooking water.

Sonlight provides staff lunches every weekday immediately after school lets out. This tends to be a large meal, so staff members often eat a lighter meal at home in the evening.

Sonlight orders most of their groceries from Miami. A Haitian-owned freighter, traveling from Miami, ships in food and personal items, as well as school supplies. Sonlight owns a freezer on board the freighter, which allows the staff to order frozen goods as well. It is a good idea to ship personal and food items in advance to travelling, so needed items will be there on arrival.
